Fox and Geese Instructions

Players

2 players

What You’ll Need

  • Your Fullnoon Games Towel

  • 1 Fox piece

  • The full set of Geese pieces supplied with the game

Aim of the Game

The two players have different goals:

  • The Fox tries to capture enough Geese to escape their trap.

  • The Geese try to surround the Fox so it cannot move.

Set Up

  1. Lay the towel flat with the Fox & Geese board facing up.

  2. Choose one player to control the Fox.

  3. The other player controls all the Geese.

  4. Place the Fox and Geese on their marked starting positions.

  5. The Geese move first.

Pieces move between the marked points by following the board’s diagonal lines.

How the Geese Move

During the Geese player’s turn:

  1. Choose one Goose.

  2. Move it one space diagonally forward along a line.

  3. The destination must be empty.

Geese cannot move backwards. They cannot jump or capture the Fox.

The Geese work together to close the empty spaces around the Fox.

How the Fox Moves

During the Fox player’s turn, the Fox may move one space diagonally in any direction along a line. The destination must be empty.

Capturing Geese

The Fox captures a Goose by jumping over it.

To make a capture:

  1. A Goose must be diagonally next to the Fox.

  2. There must be an empty space directly behind that Goose.

  3. The Fox jumps over the Goose and lands on the empty space.

  4. Remove the captured Goose from the board.

If the Fox can make another jump from its new position, it may continue capturing during the same turn. The Fox player may choose when to stop unless your group agrees that every available capture must be taken.

Winning

The Geese win when they surround the Fox so that it has no legal move and cannot make a capturing jump.

The Fox wins when it captures enough Geese that the remaining Geese can no longer form a complete trap. If this is unclear, continue playing until the Fox has a clear path that the remaining Geese cannot close.
